Chords, Pentatonics, And Scales

So You Wanna Play Guitar Or Keyboard? Well This Article Wont Teach You Everything But It Will Certainly Give You A Start. Most People Want To Pick up A Guitar Or Keyboard And Be A Rockstar, So i Will Try To Start You Off As Close To There As Possible. This Is The First Of Several Articles.

Chords: So The Simple Way To Look At Chords is This, Chords Are Notes That Compliment Each Other. Below Is A List Of Major And Minor Chords. These Notes Are Played At The Same Time To Create That Chord. For Example if You Play A,C,And E Together It Forms An A Minor Chord Which Will Have A Sadder Sound Than The A Major Chord Of A,C#,E. You Can Mix Major And Minor Chords To Create Songs. To Give You The Idea “Stairway To Heaven” Was Written in The Key Of “A Minor”, So If You Where To Play Along, Playing “A Minor” Chords For Rhythm Or “A Minor” Pentatonic Or Scale For Leads Or Solos Should Be Complementary.

Chords Advance Into Pentatonics (See Below) Which Are 5 Notes Similar To The Chords, So For Example If One Musician Is Playing A 4 Chord Progression Such As A,C,E,E, On Loop Then Playing Notes Out Of The A,C, Or E Pentatonic Would Compliment Each Other,This Is Especially Important For Lead And Soloing. The Most Commonly Played Pentatonic in American Rock Is The A Minor Pentatonic. Determining Which Pentatonic Or Scale To Play Out Of Is Usually Fairly Easy, Choose The Most Commonly Played Note In The Song, In Our Example Above Any Of Those Notes Would Be Acceptable, A Or E Would Be The Most Logical Choices.

Pentatonics Advance When They Become Scales, Much Like Pentatonics, Scales Operate In The Same Way. Learning Scale Is Important And Slow, The Best Way Is To Figure Out What Scales You Will Play Most Often And Learn Those, I Typically Play In E, A, F#, Or D. For Example When I Play Guitar I Usually Play In E Depending On What Type Of Music I Am Playing So If I Record An E Based Guitar Riff I Will Likely Play A Lead On Keyboard Using The E Pentatonic. I Will Discuss This More In Future Articles.
